Sustainable water use
Water shortages are not just a global issue. Besides the inconvenience of hose-pipe bans in the south east, over-abstraction of ground water resources leaves little reserve for future generations while over-abstraction of surface water supplies can lead to low river flows that are damaging to wildlife. Over 350 wildlife sites including 100 rivers and 200 SSSI's are considered at risk from over-abstraction.
Water use is also linked to global warming: the treatment of wastewaters is estimated to produce 0.6kg CO2 per m3 water.
West Sussex County Council chooses Waterworks to help change pupils attitudes to water consumption and disposal. together, we are developing a child-centred educational programme of:
- Audit
- Automated meter reading
- Awareness raising through child centred learning
- Appliance controls
- Behavioural change
By challenging children to think about water consumption, we hope they will have a wide influence in their homes and communities
